Divorce Settlement is fostered and encouraged in part by the Michigan divorce process. This process includes divorce mediation, divorce settlement conference, and a statutory waiting period. Each step in the formal divorce process is an opportunity to enter into a divorce settlement.
A divorce settlement can be less taxing on the family, save legal fees and allow you to control the outcome of the divorce. However, a divorce settlement does not come without risks. By way of example:
- How do you know if the divorce settlement is a good deal or not?
- What if you don’t trust your spouse or if there are undisclosed assets?
- What if you can’t agree on custody?
The key to any divorce settlement is to mitigate the risks by building trust, conducting discovery, setting realistic goals, relying on your lawyers judgment and not being afraid to go to trial.
